Mere punishment will not stop rapes

Another life destroyed by rape. Shame. It is good that at last country is reacting strongly to rape. This has become a big blot on Indian society. Unfortunately country wakes up when someone is destroyed beyond repair. But a caution here. People are angry and demanding severe punishment. And once such severe punishment is given, we have to make sure that we do not fall to slumber again as if justice has been done.

Justice will not be done untill we make our society safe for women and learn to give respect to them. And everyone has a role to play - schools, media, police, parents, law making bodies and even our film industry. We need to change our mindset. If we think only giving punishment is going to stop rapes then be sure that will not happen.

It is time country wakes up to reality and make collective efforts to put an end to such crimes. There should be a comprehensive plan involving every section of society.

- Society has to become vigilant and remain so without a blink
- Effective laws and speedy trials of offenses
- Effective security at public places and public transport
- Making girls and women aware about threats and skills to avoid these
- Collective voice against eve teasing and sexual crimes, women must speak up strongly if they face any such thing
- Sex education and Moral values education in schools
- Giving opportunity to people to sublime sexual energies in constructive manner
- Identify offenders in bud and involve them in personality correction programs
- Stop 'selling' sex in media, movies etc
- And most important is to have 'Federation for Women' as given in the Swaraj Model here. Such federation should be active, alert and effective.

We must understand that like most problems in India, rapes are common due to deficiency in governance which is due to huge gap between people of India and the government. There is immediate need of making of effective federations for effective governance. People's participation is must for safe, healthy and vibrant society.
